Q:- Why are there so few seagulls here?

A:- ME!

This beautiful "deterrent" was enjoying a stroll, with his handler, around the Royal William Yard, meeting the visitors to the restaurants, bars and galleries within these historic walls.

Saturday 29 September 2012

Red sky at morning,

Red sky at morning, sailors take warning.

This old piece of weather lore certainly came true later on this day.
The wind rose and the heavens opened and there was
widespread disruption from floods in many areas of the west country.

Friday 28 September 2012

The calm before the storm.

A quiet corner of Sutton Harbour,
two days before we were hit by another period of high winds and intense rain.

Gale force winds reached 70 miles per hour on exposed headlands,
and some areas of the West Country had six months rainfall in two days.

Newquay

Newquay is probably one of the most well known tourist towns on the north coast of Cornwall.
It has a magnificent stretch of surfing beaches,

a picturesque and animated harbour,

and what many consider to be  the most appalling built environment along the coast..

Graduation Day

Students of Plymouth University, and their proud families celebrate on Plymouth Hoe.

And those who have become inseparable, vow never to lose touch in the years to come.

Whilst Plymouth Sound formed the background in the vast majority of the photos.

Early one morning............

....... just as the sun was rising,
on the South West Coastal Path between Constantine Bay and Treyarnon Bay,
this chap was catching fish for his breakfast.

And a few yards further on this chap was catching a few waves before work.

Sunday 23 September 2012

West country health food.

This part of the world is famous for its herds of prime dairy cattle.
So, wherever possible, most food in Devon and Cornwall comes with cream in or on it, preferable both.

This bakery in Newquay would be considered a Health Food Shop.

Saturday 22 September 2012

Oleracea Capitata

Tis the season for ornamental cabbage.
Love the look.
Pity about the smell.

Friday 21 September 2012

Early Morning Meditation

A tiny figure sat motionless on the rocks at Constantine Bay very early on a chilly, late September morning.

Constatine Bay is about fifty miles from Plymouth, on the North Cornwall coast, near Padstow.

The Geyser at the Tinside Lido

A Geyser is a spring characterised by the intermittent discharge of water ejected turbulently,
 accompanied by steam.

Unfortunately there is absolutely no steam, only ice cold water.

Busy doing nothing

I'm busy doing nothing, working all day through,I'm trying to find lots of things not to do.I'm busy going nowhere, isn't it such a crime ?I'd like to be unhappy but I never do have the time.

Green

Is this what the City Council had in mind when they promised that under their leadership
Plymouth would become a Green City?

Saturday 15 September 2012

Shades

Thursday morning dawned crystal clear.
Perhaps Autumn will make up for Summer.

Friday 14 September 2012

Bon Voyage.

Look! There they are!
Can you see Grandma and Granddad?

Everybody wave!

The Pont Aven leaving Plymouth for Santander, in Northern Spain, last Sunday afternoon.

Thursday 13 September 2012

The Judges' verdict is final.

The judges  reveal their scores in the "Most Attractive Harbour in the Known World" contest.

Once again, Padstow is the winner.

Wednesday 12 September 2012

Lemon Sole in Padstow

On Saturday we had a truly splendid lunch in Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant, on the quayside, in Padstow.

An attractive, airy and relaxed dining room,
genuinely welcoming and professional front of house staff,
with a superb meal from the kitchen brigade.

What's in a name?

Early on Saturday morning the speed boats were doing a brisk trade but I'm not sure that all the customers really understood just how fast and bouncy their ride was going to be once they left the calm of the harbour and entered the choppy, windswept waters of the estuary.

But the clue is clearly in the name of the craft.

Neither, from the way they were dressed, did they seem aware of just wet they were likely to get.

Gone Fishin'

Even if the kids have lost interest, dad refuses to give up without netting something.

Sunday 9 September 2012

An impressive hirsute appendage

This fine "soup-strainer" belongs to the well known TV programme maker Dick Strawbridge,
who, like me, was enjoying the beautiful weather in Padstow on Thursday.

Saturday 8 September 2012

Sunrise over the confluence.

The River Tavy flows out under the railway bridge to enter the River Tamar
on its journey to Plymouth Sound.

Looking towards the hills on the southern edge of Dartmoor, a few miles north of Plymouth.

Friday 7 September 2012

All the world's a stage .....

....... but many high bridges are the location for episodes of deeply tragic human despair.

These flowers are attached to the railing of the pedestrian walkway on the Tamar Road Bridge.

Making up for lost time.

After the appalling weather this summer these bees are making up for lost time.
