Sunday in Devonport Park

Spring is Sprung,
The grass is riz,
I wonder where the birdies is.
                                                                Ogden Nash.

Local Derby

Yesterday was the home leg of this year's  "Local Derby" rugby matches
between Plymouth Albion (in white) and the Cornish Pirates (red), from Penzance in Cornwall.

The Pirates have won the last ten encounters, and made no mistakes today, beating us 26pts to 20

THe juniors' match, at half time, was equally exciting.

Phormium in the rain

Even on a dark day with many heavy showers,
there is still plenty of beauty in the City Centre flower beds.

Friday 28 March 2014

Springtime Alignment

The three spires belong to
(i) Unitarian, (ii) Baptist, (iii) Church of England.

Thursday 27 March 2014

A room with a view.

Like a snail, he carries his home around with him wherever he goes.
Which is very handy because he can enjoy the sunshine and shelter from the heavy showers.

Wednesday 26 March 2014

The loneliest tree in Plymouth.

It stands in front of a "concrete forest", an end wall of the Drake's Circus Shopping Mall,
but none of the passers-by seem to give it a glance.

Tuesday 25 March 2014

Hi-Visibility Jackets.

These gardeners' jackets are colour coordinated,
Pink for working with the Blossom trees,
Yellow for tending the Daffodils.

Sunday 23 March 2014

This lady has taken the advice of Jenny Joseph ....

and is getting in some practice.

Warning

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Saturday 22 March 2014

One man and his dog.

This the first time I've seen this Sand Sculptor at work in the City Centre.

Thursday 20 March 2014

An early spring morning on the River Tamar.

These two riverside communities face one another across the river,

This is the hamlet of Cremyll on the Cornish side of the river.

This is the Mayflower Marina at Stonehouse, on the Plymouth Bank of the river.

Contrasts

Two very different corners of Devonport Park.

A "Wild" woodland glade.

A "formal" garden

Monday 17 March 2014

Get the party started.

St Patrick's Day window display in Plymouth.

After the Irish Rugby Team's magnificent victory in Paris on Saturday,
to win this year's Six Nations Championship, the party could go for days.

Sunday 16 March 2014

Safely gathered in.

These large tree trunks look harmless now,
but you can imagine the threat they posed to these expensive pleasure craft,
as they crashed about during our recent record breaking winter storms.

Thursday 13 March 2014

If this spell of calm weather lasts .....

...... it will not be long before every one of these mooring buoys,
on the River Tamar at Saltash, has a yacht tied to it.

Sunday 9 March 2014

Musica Universalis

or the Harmony of the spheres.

Here is a portion of the distant Adobe Constellation, a collection of strange rugged planets.

and of the billions of planets in the Universe here is a scale representation of the 786 that we know.

Saturday 8 March 2014

It's Shoal Time!

The bodies of this shoal of 16 Sunfish,
were designed by a group of local apprentices
and decorated by students and graduates of Plymouth College of Art and Plymouth University.

They are on display in the City Centre before they take up their Summer positions on the Waterfront, marking the Tourist Trail.

Wednesday 5 March 2014

Making for the open sea.

A few days ago the Plymouth Pilot guided the CEMSEA lll, a small Cyprus registered cement carrier,
down the River Plym, out into Plymouth Sound and past the Breakwater Lighthouse,
where he climbed down the ladder to his waiting Pilot boat and returned to shore
and the Cemsea made her way out into the heavy traffic of the English Channel.

Monday 3 March 2014

Across the rooftops to the River Tamar

Yesterday's post looked out to the sea.
Today we look down from the same hill, but onto the River Tamar
and a small part of the northern end of the Naval Dockyard at Devonport,
and the homes where once lived the thousands of workers who were employed there.
