Devonport Dockyard.

Over the long history of the Royal Naval Dockyard, on the bank of the River Tamar, from foundation in 1691, well into the 20th century, one constant need was housing for its ever growing workforce, as close as possible to the dock gates.

By the end of World War 2 the yard's workforce had reached 14,400, and by 1957 that had risen to 19,423, of whom only 566 were women.

Times have changed and the workforce has been dramatically reduced as the the country's defence posture has been redefined, but the houses are still there.
