Standing on this little "island" between the two busy carriageways is bit like being a matador.
You hear the thunder of the charging "bull",
you feel draught as he passes with inches of you,
and your nostrils fill with his smell.
Indeed, it's a dangerous crossing point. I understand there has been a fatal accident here too. There used to be a very wide pedestrian underpass at this very spot until about ten years ago, conveniently connecting the Hoe area with the city centre. No doubt it was 'out of fashion' with the urban planners that week. Big mistake.
