Two very British boxes

The days of the iconic Red telephone Boxes on British streets are numbered.
The rise in the ownership of mobile phones has taken its toll on the old phone box.
The number of boxes, operated by British Telecomms, peaked at around 137,000
in the late 1990s, before falling, year on year, to about 40,000 by 2017, when BT announced
that it was planning to remove 20,000 of these , because they were rarely used.
Although no longer working, this box was saved by residents of the street
who bought it from BT, because they liked the way it brightened up their street.

Perhaps the future for the 115,000 Red Letterboxes dotted around the British Isles,
is equally challenged by the rise of email, and the decline in conventional postal traffic.
The peak for Royal Mail deliveries was in 2005 - 2006, when 84 million items
were delivered every working day. Today the figure stands at roughly 58 million items per day.
