A Sombre Anniversary

2021 marks the 80th anniversary of The Blitz of Plymouth, when early in 1941, major German air raids brought death and destruction to the city.

While the Royal Naval Base on the River Tamar (see yesterday's post) was undoubtedly the enemy’s target, bombs fell all over the city destroying nearly every civic building in Plymouth, as well as 41 churches, 26 schools, eight cinemas and 3,754 houses. Attacks continued till as late as May 1944 with two minor air raids in that month. During the 59 bombing attacks on the city, 1,172 civilians were killed and 4,448 injured, and much of the city was turned to rubble.

I was 3 years old when in 1943 the house we were living in, near the city's main railway station, was hit by an incendiary device and burnt to the ground.

This is the map of the bombs that fell on Plymouth.

There is no public record of how many hit the target of the Naval Base.
