A Cornish Pilot Gig

The Cornish Pilot Gig is a six-oared rowing boat, built of Cornish narrow leaf elm, 32 feet (9.8m) long, with a beam of 4 feet 10 inches (1.47m).

An important role of the Cornish Pilot Gigs was taking pilots out to incoming vessels from the Atlantic. Competing gigs would race to get their pilot on board a vessel first in order to get the job and hence the payment.

Nowadays they still race at regattas in towns and villages around the coasts ofthe West Country.

But the biggest turn out of the year is always for the World Championships, which takes place in May, in The Scilly Isles, 28 miles off the end of Cornwall

.
Bearing in mind the job these boats were design to do racing doesn't stop if it gets a bit rough.
