The main industry of the counties of the Devon and Cornwall peninsula, at the extreme southwestern tip of the UK, is now tourism, based on its beautiful and varied coastline together with its beautiful rolling countryside and rugged high moors.
But the landscape is littered with the remains of its once dominant industry, the mining of tin and copper, together with the extraction of a range of minerals including arsenic. As cheaper sources of these vital materials where exploited around the world, the industry here could no longer compete and thousands of jobs disappeared.
But perhaps recent developments may bring much needed well paid jobs back to the region.
There have been some encouraging results from recent attempts at harnessing
Geothermal Energy in Cornwall.
