Stonehouse Creek

Stonehouse Creek is an inlet off the River Tamar,

near where it enters Plymouth Sound.

Regeneration

In common with many other port cities in the UK towards the end of the 20th century, 

sections of Plymouth's waterfront were characterised by dilapidated industrial buildings 

and very sub standard housing.

One such area was the shoreline of Stonehouse Creek, a small muddy inlet off the River Tamar. 

But now regeneration is well under way.

 

The derelict small industrial buildings have been cleared away and new waterside terraces have taken their place.

 

Many of the once decaying large houses, are being expensively returned to their former glory.

Looking inland from the high ground of Plymouth Hoe toward St Andrew's church and the Guildhall,

and jumble of buildings which have grown over centuries.

 The clock tower and the chimney rise from  within The Royal William Yard,

the one time Victualling Facility of the Royal Navy, but now the home of Bars, 

Restaurants, Bistros, Galleries and Luxury Apartments.

The Hidden Garden (1)

Early last Friday morning I wandered into this "hidden" garden,

sheltered behind high wall of this corner of the magnificent 

Royal William Yard complex.

Deserted on a cold, blustery, February morning, 

it was like coming upon the scene of an Edwardian garden party, just after the guests had left.

But perhaps their spirits linger.

The ferry from the beautiful hamlet of Cremyll, on the Cornish bank of the river,

makes it way back to Admiral's Hard, its terminus in Stonehouse, on the Plymouth shore.

The river frontage of the Stonehouse district of Plymouth, 

like all the other "waterside" areas of the city,is under constant redevelopment.

 Many of the once prestigious but now shabby, older properties are being expensively
 renovated and returned to their original state.
While other sites are being cleared so that new apartment developments can rise in their place.  

A few hundred metres along the shoreline from the area above,
is the first phase of a major residential development in Millbay Dock, in Stonehouse.
