Taking it easy in Santa Cruz, La Palma

Santa Cruz is a very attractive town with a welcoming, relaxed  atmosphere.

The black sand challenges the conventional image of a what a beach should look like.

Homeward Bound

I've been away for a couple of weeks on a cruise down to Madeira and around the Canary Isles,
a distance of around 1900 nautical miles each way.
I'll post some images of trip over the next few days.

The man who likes waving at passing ships.

One bonus of glass walled buildings is that they create a kaleidoscopic reflection
 of everything that passes by.

Plymouth has just announced plans for a new Cruise Ship Terminal, to be built in Millbay Dock.
I doubt that the surrounding buildings will create such beautiful reflections as these in Amsterdam.

"And the ship sailed on"

Last night I watched the 1983 Fellini movie "E la nave va",
set in 1914, it follows a group who leave Naples, on a luxury liner,
to scatter the ashes of a famous opera singer.

A couple of months ago I sailed on a wonderful Italian cruise ship
and it occurs to me that essentially not much has changed in the last hundred years or so.

Sailing into Amsterdam.

Following the referendum, a timetable for the UK's exit from the European Union has begun to take shape. So it was timely that last week I had the chance to join a cruise, along the the North Sea coast, visiting some of my favourite European  cities.

Reflections of the ship in the windows of the waterside office and apartment blocks,
as it makes its way up to the Cruise Terminal.

The cruise ship Nautica, anchored in Plymouth Sound on Tuesday.

By current cruise ship standards, the Nautica is tiny,
with a passenger capacity of 646 and a crew of 400.

She was making her last port of call
before returning to the starting point
of this short cruise around the British Isles

MS Amadea at anchor in Plymouth Sound.

The cruise ship Amadea sailed into Plymouth from Dublin during last week .
She operates in the German market so we had several hundred German visitors thronging
the waterfront and the narrow streets in the historic Barbican area

While she was in port the ferry from France, MS Armorique, sailed in from Roscoff.
